Vieques in brief
Vieques and Culebra are part of the Puerto Rican "Commonwealth".
Two thirds of Vieques in 2003 was handed over to US Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, from the US Navy, and is now the largest "National Park" in the Caribbean. Many of the finest untouched beaches in the Caribbean, and the nature reserve, had been cordoned off for around 65 years but, are now available to the public!
Nature lovers look out for Manitees, Turtles, Bats (in ex Navy munitions stores), Paso Fino horses, birds, fish, flora and fauna too plentiful to describe here. For further information we recommend the following web-sites:

Did You Know ?
In WW2 the Navy planned to join Vieques to Puerto Rico, (10 miles away), to form a giant safe harbor for the US fleet, and for the British fleet in case the Germans gained naval superiority. Mosquito Pier was built to 1.5 miles long before the project was abandoned as a consequence of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The pier has since been mostly used for fishing, but will shortly become the new ferry dock.
